Far From Invincible
A recent article from the Wall Street Journal gives an account of the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India. The article is a puzzle put together from pieces of eye witness accounts, bleakly revealing the picture of another chapter in the War on Terror. These attacks call into question the preparedness of U.S. national security, and our ability to cope with another major attack.
The Heritage Foundation’s James Carafano published a WebMemo addressing how America should respond in light of another attack. In, After Mumbai: Could It Happen Here? What to Do, Carafano highlights that “it is unrealistic to believe that all homeland security efforts will deny every attack every time.” He recommends that in the event of another attack, we resist the urge to throw money at the problem, claim every security measure infringes civil liberty, claim we deserve it or overreact by changing our counterterrorism strategy. He highlights that our counterterrorism programs are working, as shown by the fact we haven’t been attacked since 9/11. In light of the Mumbai attacks, the U.S. should do a little house-cleaning, making our national security even better
